The Church of San Francisco de la Montaña, located in the province of Veraguas, has a structure that evokes a painting brush in art. It is an architectural gem that is part of the monuments´ complex and sites declared National Heritage. It is part of San Francisco de la Montaña residents’ pride, who talk to every foreigner about the majesty that this church represents. It is named after the village.
Colonial art of San Francisco de la Montaña is evident in its altars, retable, pulpits and other expressions of art represented in the carvings of its interiors. The major altar is about six meters high and five meters wide. It is constituted of the altar, in the shape of a funeral home, and the retable. Continuing with the tour of the San Francisco de la Montaña church, you can find the altar which is divided into three vertical sections by columns. These are canephori style statues called "Indians" or "cholas"(Indians) by the locals.
On the way, you will find the pulpit, made of wood, supported by a column in the shape of an aboriginal woman.
The church has undergone two major restoration processes; the first one in 1932, and the second in 2000.
The town of San Francisco de la Montaña was founded in 1621 by priest Gaspar Rodríguez and Valderas, and was a settlement of the indigenous community; a town that had enormous wealth during the presence of the Spanish crown. In addition to a church with baroque characteristics, it is a town that inspires poets and writers. And that's why in March 2010, it will host the Festival of Art and Literature. |
